BREAKING: A tragic aviation accident occurred today near São Paulo, Brazil, involving a Voepass ATR 72-500 aircraft. The plane, carrying 62 people—58 passengers and four crew members—was en route to Guarulhos International Airport from Cascavel when it crashed into a residential neighborhood in the city of Vinhedo.
Initial reports indicate that the aircraft experienced a sharp descent, spiraling out of control before impacting the ground. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, with some speculation pointing to adverse weather conditions, including possible icing on the wings, as a contributing factor. Videos of the incident circulating online show the aircraft descending vertically, with some witnesses reporting the loss of parts of the plane’s horizontal stabilizer.
Emergency services quickly responded to the scene, where a large fire ensued following the crash. Despite the crash occurring in a populated area, there have been no reported injuries on the ground. However, all those on board are feared dead, as confirmed by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who expressed his condolences and called for a moment of silence during a public event.
